Ipe (pronounced “EE – pay”) is a sustainably harvested tropical hardwood, sometimes called ironwood or Brazilian walnut. It is extremely hard and durable and is very resistant to insects and rot. The grade we use is virtually knot-free. Like all wood, it weathers to a gray (the color of tree bark) unless it is treated. Untreated, it should last at least twice as long as cedar or redwood; so treatment is mainly cosmetic. The most popular treatment is Mesmers oil which maintains the rich brown color and keeps the surface much nicer. Ipe has a Class A fire rating (like concrete and steel.)
The cost of 5/4 x 6 ipe decking (actually 1.0″ x 5.5″) is comparable to many plastic and composite decking materials. Using the thinner 1x 6 ipe decking (actually .75″ x 5.5″) costs almost as much and reduces fastener holding power. We have used five ipe fastening systems. Currently, we typically install ipe with “Deckmasters” “blind” fasteners. They provide much more solid and secure connections than do clip systems. There are no screw heads showing; and no debris-catching edge trim is required.
